This home is the family residence of the Modernist architect Walter Gropius, a founder of the Bauhaus School in Weimar, Germany. The family came to New England in 1937, forced to leave Germany because of his association with "degenerate " modernism. The home combines elements of New England architecture with elements from the Bauhaus workshop.
